SoCal Grassroots is an independent volunteer organization – committed to helping to move our society towards true equality, justice, and democratic ideals. We are dedicated to advancing an agenda rooted in hope and the real grassroots values of opportunity, integrity, community action and giving volunteers ways to get involved. Our actions include supporting grassroots volunteers who serve as mobile strike teams and phone callers who are going into Republican congressional districts to turn them blue.

CANCELED: SOCAL GRASSROOTS LUNCHEON HONORING DEBRA BOWEN

Unfortunately, we have to cancel the June 27th luncheon with Secretary of State Debra Bowen due to both conflicts with other major events in Southern California and slow sales of tickets due to the economic climate. We will be contacting ticket holders by e-mail and phone this week.

Secretary Bowen was looking forward to flying down from Sacramento to join all of us as our 2009 Grassroots Champion. We look forward to honoring her in the future.

With nearly two million Californians struggling with unemployment SoCal Grassroots is offering what resources we have available to help out. Since the most valuable resources we have to offer our members are our e-mail newsletter and our website, we're going to start using them to do what we can to provide employment resources to our members.

We'll list the best links for jobs and job seeking information that we can find, and ask you to let us know about others. We'll actively solicit job posting from charitable, non-profit and other Progressive organizations so that you can make job applications based on your conscience as well as your need. Just look under the Get Connected tab near the top of the site for the link to our Job Resources page.

PROTEST PROPOSITION 8!

SoCal Grassroots supports equality for all, which is why we oppose the passage/upholding of Proposition 8, which codifies discrimination into the California State Constitution. SoCal Grassroots supports any and all actions to or repeal Proposition 8. Please visit our page with actions you can take to help in this important endeavor to restore civil rights. We will update the page as more actions become known to us.

PENDING LEGISLATION - THE ESCALATION AND CONTINUED OCCUPATION IN IRAQ

The ad hoc committee on Legislative Action and Advocacy presented its initial recommendations on three Iraq bills to the Coordinating Committee at its February 11 meeting. The Coordinating Committee approved the three bills: S287 (Sen. Kennedy, sponsor plus 9 co-sponsors), HR 353 (Rep. Markey plus 24 co-sponsors) and HR 508 (Rep. Woolsey plus 34 co-sponsors).
